Building Your Own Terrarium It's a lot easier than you may think! First, make sure that you have all the required materials for building your terrarium. The most important of these, of course, is the terrarium itself. Virtually any type of clear plastic or glass container will work just fine. Bottles, fish bowls, jars, you name it. There are even special containers built just for terrariums. Your choices are endless; just make sure that you choose a clear container that's been cleaned with hot soapy water, as tinted or cloudy glass or plastic will interfere with plant growth by reducing light.

Ikebana as an art form
Ikebana (ee-kay-bah-nah) is the art of Japanese flower arranging. The object is simply to create something of beauty for the delight of others and, in so doing, improve yourself. The artist sees it as a discipline of the inner spirit for the ultimate purification of the mind and heart. No judging of the work is conducted.
Dating back to the 15th Century, this art form reflects three fundamental characteristics of Japanese thinking: an innate love of nature, an abiding love of line, and an instinctive love of symbolism. For the Japanese, flowers signify communion with the heart of nature.
Through the centuries, ikebana has grown to incorporate 23 leading schools. The first, Ikenobo (15th Century), advocates using the natural bend of branches. This school, together with Sogetsu, Ohara and Misho would be considered the leading schools.
The Sogetsu School has emerged as an exemplary contemporary school whose arrangements fit seamlessly in today's modern and traditional d/cor. The goal of your arrangement is to create three levels of flowers -- high, medium and low. The highest point should equal twice the width of your container, plus twice the height. The medium level is approximately 3/4 of the highest point, and the lowest point is 3/4 the height of the medium level. Asymmetry and the use of empty space is an essential feature to composition, so be sure not to clutter the arrangement with too many items. You can use any type of flower or branch to create your arrangement. But you should never use four of the same flower in a single arrangement. The tools for the art include a Kenzan (pin frog), Hasami (clippers or scissors ), and Hana (fresh flowers).www.hollowcreekbonsai.com.

Hinterland Trading Air Plant terrariums have become extremely popular. Their charming personalities, minimal care, and lack of soil make them an ideal way to bring a little piece of nature into your living space and brighten any room. Their uniqueness also makes them a perfect gift that will leave a lasting impression on any lucky recipient. The Black Forest Set B includes 2 Air Plants (Ionantha Scaposa), 2 Teardrop 5 ½ Inch seated or hanging glass terrariums with one large opening and two smaller vent openings, a flat bottom, a loop with twine to hang, black river pebbles, and live green moss to set the scene. Also included is a 2 oz. Hinterland Trading Air Plant Fertilizer to keep the plants vibrant and detailed care instructions. Air Plants (Tillandsia) get their common name from the fact they don’t require soil. They are epiphytes, which attach to other plants or trees for support. Their roots are only used to anchor themselves and are normally removed during cultivation for aesthetics. They are not parasitic, instead they gather micro nutrients from the air and water in structures called trichomes on their leaves. As the plant dries the trichomes take on a white powder look. After watering the plant will return to a vibrant green. Air Plants must dry fully between watering because they are susceptible to rot if left wet to long. These Air Plants will only bloom once, but after the bloom they can form up to 12 “Pupsâ€, or offspring, at their base. The main plant will slowly be on its way out, but the Pups will continue to thrive and will separate when mature. Air Plants prefer filtered sunlight as their natural home is under tree canopy. This makes them perfect house plants. Air Plant care is pretty simple. Upon arrival give your plants a good hour or two soak in a shallow bowl of water. Our plants are shipped on the drier side to avoid rot while in transit. Place the plants root/base side up and out of the water. The base is the area susceptible to rot if left wet to long. Over the cou...

Open and airy conifer (cone bearing) with light green foliage turning darker with age. One of the best known trees from the South Pacific. Will tolerate warm temperatures and does not even object to dryness, although it does not like glaring sunshine. We grow them in groups of three (3) in a pot and trim the branches by hand (thumb and index finger.) Decorates well for any holiday or season. Easy care.
