The color of the Yellow Christmas Cactus may vary from yellow to pinkish-yellow, to peach-yellow depending upon conditions beyond our control. These include temperature, shipping time, pH of the soil, and the fertilizer content of the soil. To the left we have shown examples of the color range of the Yellow Christmas Cactus. As Christmas approaches we cannot guarantee the plant will arrive in bloom. Christmas cactus can drop their flower buds in shipment, again due to conditions beyond our control. The Christmas cactus (Zygocactus) is native to the South American jungles. The flowers bloom once a year and come in shades of fuchsia, yellow, salmon, pink, white, orange, red and sometimes will even have a combination of the colors. The Christmas cacti are tropical plants. They require sunlight and the blooms last longer with cooler temperatures. Keep them away from heaters, fireplaces, radiators, furnace ducts, and other heat sources. In order to insure your plant will bloom in time for Christmas, you will need to give the plant a rest period. Cut back on the watering leaving the soil only partly moist. Allow at least 14 hours of total darkness for the plant at night and sun during the day, until the buds begin to form. Start the dark period in early September. Once the buds form they can take from 10 to 12 weeks to fully bloom.

Patchouli oils come from a plant called Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), from the same family as Clary Sage, Lamiaceae. This plant is thought to have originated n the Phillippines and is now cultivated in many tropical areas. It was introduced into Europe about 1844 when shawls were wrapped with Patchouli. The fragrant woody, earthy, somewhat spicy, musky and smoky scent of Patchouli is produced by the leaves of this herb. The strength and unique odor quality of Patchouli lends itself to oriental types of perfumes. It gives a long-lasting fragrant allure to any perfume. The plant is a bushy perennial herb, up to three feet tall with hairy leaves that are 4 inches long. The herb itself is used to fragrance and perfume carpets and textiles, and to repel insects. Wrapping fabrics in Patchouli herb has been a practice for a thousand years. Hardy in zones 8-11. In cooler regions it makes an excellent houseplant and may be set outside during the summer. Patchouli prefers full sun or partial sun. It grows 12-15" tall in a season and if kept from year to year can reach a height of 4 feet. It is ideal in the fragrant garden or containers. Snake Plant, Mother-In-Law's Tongue - Sanseveria - 6" Pot
Brand: Hirts: Snake Plant
Sansevierias or as they are commonly called Snake Plants or Mother-in-law's Tongue have a rich history of folklore and new science. These plants have a rich history of cultivation. In China, it was kept as a treasured houseplant because the Eight Gods bestowed their eight virtues on those who grew them. These virtues include long life, prosperity, intelligence, beauty, art, poetry, health and strength. The plants were kept near the entrances inside the home so that the eight virtues could pass through in a manner pre-Feng Shui. These plants also were placed in fine restaurants, herbalists, acupuncturists, doctor's offices, accountant's offices, banks, shrines, monastaries, and even in rice paddies. Sansevierias were grown and cherished well before the Chinese ti plant (Dracaena spp.) also known as the Good Luck Bamboo! The sansevieria is also referred to as a dragon for its many unique qualities. As with many Asian martial arts techniques, the strength comes from within. The sansevieria has been known to split large earthen pots upon reaching larger sizes. The Chinese have usually kept this plant potted in a pot within a ceramic pot often ornated with dragons and phoenixes. The attraction of this plant towards dragons is said to be magnetic. An interesting research program has been done by NASA using a few selected plants (one is Sansevieria) for air purification and to curb "Sick Building Syndrome." Growing the Snake Plant is easy. It will thrive in very bright light to almo...

Platycerium biforcatum (Exotic Staghorn Fern). The staghorn fern is an epiphyte that lives in the tropical forests of southeast Asia and Australia. This plant has a short rhizome from which both sterile and fertile fronds sprout. The sterile fronds are rounded and form a sort of involucre which encases the branch on which the plant is attached. From these sprout the fronds which carry the reproductive apparatus, recognizable by a sort of rusty down situated in the ventral part of the plant. The fronds are long, wide, and laciniated at the top. Staghorn Fern is one of the more unusual house plants. It grows without its roots in soil and produces 2 types of fronds. One type is the branched frond that gives the plant its name. The other round, flat frond forms a collar around the branched fronds. The round frond may be 3 to 4 inches across on young plants but 3 to 4 feet across on older plants. Ideal temperatures are between 60 degrees and 80 degrees. It prefers bright, but indirect light. The plant you will receive is mounted and growing on a long wooden wall plaque
